Renton Brother's SUGAR BUSH TOUR & Candy on the snow...

Monday (Easter Monday)

I have set up a tour of a local sugar bush and candy on the snow educational activity. Kim Renton (District #2 Teacher Assistant) and her husband Dale, own a local sugar bush in the Stilesville area and are egar to host our group. Kim will give a tour of the facility and education about the collecting, evaporating, boiling and making of the products. Basically we will recieve a complete overview from tree to bottle. We will also get to see the evaporator working, weather and sap conitions permitting, and of course we will get to sample the famous candy on the snow... YUMMY!! Also, if March weather is not cooperative for sap runs, Kim has a fantastic 8x10 photo album detailing all the different steps of the process, as well as other great tools to help both young and old understand the true meaning of what goes into the making of maple syrop and maple products. Kim has been giving this educational tour to our local school district, as well as to may local daycares, nursing homes and other seniors groups, I have been organizing tours with Kim since the late 90's. She is fantastic and very well versed in the process. Where Kim is now a full time Teacher Assistant, her only option for a tour date and time was Easter weekend so I choose Easter Monday, since most of us have obligations and activities on Friday and Sunday.

The cost is $2.00 a person. (Anyone eating the candy is considered as a paying customer for the tour.)

Also, the Renton's will have products on hand for purchase... syrop, maple butter, maple cream, small maple candies... generally the sap prices range from $15.00 - $85.00 (depending on the size of the bottle or jug). Maple candy can be purchase for as low as $1.00, maple butter and maple cream are genearlly under $10.00, again depending on the size of the container.

ON the 9th of April, Families meet at the Stilesville United Chruch on the Gorge Road at 1PM. We walk from the Stilesville United Chruch parking lot down a dirt road through the sugar woods; while walking you can see tapped trees, observe the sap running through the pipeline and see sap cans on the trees. Walking from the church, it takes approximately 10 minutes to arrive at the Renton Brother's Sugar Bush. It is a very well kept dirt road, wagon and stroller friendly.

MAD SCIENCE - Date TBA - 6 weeks will run in March and April

Open to both English & French (as long as there are enough children to run the program... min 5 per class - max 20)
Cost $65.00/child
6 one hour sessions
Parents have the option to stay with their children or they can drop there children off
Location: TBA (depending on number of sessions being run and number of children)
Day: Thursday or Friday mornings

Dear Moncton Home Educators,

I have contacted the director of the Mad Science program, Lori LeBlanc and set up a tentative program for our children.

The program running this term in greater moncton english schools includes
6 one hour sessions: insects, energy, earthworks (geology), jr engineers, the
science behind movies, science detectives use.

The program running this term in greater moncton french schools includes
6 one hour sessions and is called crazy chemworks. The 6 sessions are: slime
time, super sticky stuff, jr reactors, ph factor, chem in a flash and glow show.

Either of these programs could be used for us in both languages and they would even consider running a longer program if you would like to take part in all 12 lessons.

The location is not determined at present. We have three options, our church, the Lutz Mountain Meeting House or my home. The location will be determined after I recieve some feedback from the parents that are interested. If we only have enough children to run one program for six weeks than I will host the mad science at my house. However, if we have more interested than I can accomidate at my home we will use one of the other options but that will increase the cost of the program most likely by about $5.00/child.

The cost would be $65 per child. (Possibility of an extra fee for a building donation or rental fee)

Age Grouping: Mad Science usually groups the children into 2 separate age groupings,
grades K-2 and 3-6. This allows them to gear their "talk" to the age level a bit
better.

Mad Science does not require parent supervision, however, they also do allow parent participation if that is something that the parents would like. They are very flexible and are willing to accomidate us in any manner.

As well, please indicate a time in the morning that you would prefer. Please give me two options... Option One, which I will do my best to accomidate and option two, just another option that would work for your family.

Science LabEx 2012

The Crandall Science faculty will be hosting the LabEx Science Lab program again this year. As in years past there will be 10 three hour, high school level labs (two each day for five days) in Biology and Chemistry for students completing their high school programs. We prefer to register students that are at least 16 years old and that have completed at least the Grade 11 level of both Chemistry and Biology.

The dates that we have selected are May 23, 24,25, 28 and 29. Registration will be $ 150 (non-refundable and does not include accommodations or meals, students less than 18 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone who will be responsible for the student outside of the laboratory periods). On-campus accommodations are available in residence (a Single or Double room, with “sleeping bag” or own bedding, and towels is $27.00/night/person is the cheapest rate and it includes breakfast). Fire Station Field Trip

1) We had a wonderful response of people signing up to go so at this point we are not able to add any more people.

2) In the rare event that there is a big fire and all the firefighters and firetrucks are needed, then the tour would be postponed at the last minute. This is obviously understandable but most likely everything will go according to plan :)

Otherwise everything looks good to go for the 16th at 10am.

Tour of Riverview Firestation (650 Pinewood Road) - November 16 (Wednesday)

Interactive, fun tour of firehall by local firefighters for homeschooled children grades K through 8 (or up :).
Tour starts at 10 am and will last about an hour. Parents to stay with children during tour.

For children 5 years and up but the Firehall will allow some children under 5*.(*Because of liability reasons the Firehall does not usually do tours for children under 5 but when I talked to them they were pretty easy going and said some younger children tagging along with their older siblings would be fine. Must be with their parents though.)

Picnic and hike

The weather appears to be good for Friday so we will be meeting for a picnic lunch this Friday, Oct. 21st at noon at the Irving Chapel Grounds in Bouctouche.

After our picnic, we will stroll around grounds and enjoy the fall leaves and the gardens. Their are some great trails to hike or bike.

Two Youth Zone/YMCA Activities Coming Up

This activity is being posted here by way of a community announcement and is not sponsored by MCHS/PECM.

The Youth Zone is happy to invite you to a day filled with fun at our local Corn Maze. We will meet at 11am and pay a fee of $4, required by you. The maze will take approximately 2 hours to complete depending on how quick we can find our way through the maze. We will enter the corn maze and try and attempt to find our way around several different zones, trying to collect all that is required of us.

You are required to find your own transportation to and from the event. I will meet you there and will take you through along with another group joining us.

Bouctouche Field Trip Postponed

Due to the rain forecast tomorrow, we are re-scheduling the field trip to Bouctouche. We plan on going next Friday, Oct 21st and instead of meeting at the Dunes, we will meet for a picnic at the picnic tables in the Irving Chapel grounds at 12:00. After lunch, we can take a nature walk and then whoever is interested can enjoy a visit to Frenchy's.

Field Trip to the Dunes

Homeschoolers will be meeting on Friday, October 14th, 10:30 am. at the Bouctouche Dunes. We will tour the information center and walk the dunes for approximately 1 1/2 hours. Some will be packing a picnic and, after lunch, touring the grounds of the Irving Chapel and their Elizabethan gardens. The chapel grounds are home to several varieties of trees and should provide a spectacular display by Oct. 14th.

Dress for the great outdoors. Pack a picnic and your cameras. This will be a very "unstructured" and relaxing day. Some of us might even visit "Frenchy's" in Bouctouche before returning to Moncton.

Here are the directions to the Dunes:

Directions: Take Exit 32A (for Bouctouche) off HWY 11 onto route 475. Follow route 475 through Bouctouche and out along the coast north. You will see the dunes before you come to the Irving Eco Centre.

Art Classes

There is an art class for children starting (10 – 12).

It will be on Tuesday night the 27th of September from 7pm to 8:30. The course is $150 for 8 weeks of lessons. I am enclosing a curriculum for the children and also one for the drawing class for teens and adults which started last Monday Night. Update on Registering with the School District

Hello!
I just spoke with Paul at HSLDA and he informed me of the legalities for registering with the district as a homeschooler.
1. New Brunswick requires homeschoolers to have an exemption from school attendance. The way NB gives you an official exemption is via registration with your school district. In the eyes of school officials, if you haven't received an exemption for the current school year, your children are truant, not homeschooling.
2. NB requires registration for children ages 5-18.
3. Any homeschooler may register with the English district in their area. It is easier. If you are registering with the French district, you may wish to get specific advice on what forms to fill out, etc. Be prepared for more difficulty if you register with the French district. HSLDA is working hard to get this problem fixed. It is discriminatory, in their opinion.
4. Since the deadline for application with the district was September 15, Paul advised those not registered to go ahead and send the form in with a cover letter explaining that you were not aware until now that you needed to register and did so as soon as you learned of your obligation to register. If you choose not to register until next year, be aware that if you have a problem (e.g. social services gets involved in your life, or a disgruntled relative turns you in) not being registered could cause your case to be more complicated.

Bonjour!

J'organise une conférence de mathématiques qui sera donnée en français par un professeur de l'Université de Moncton et sera d'une durée d'environ une heure. Il présentera les mathématiques comme étant «amusantes et fascinantes». Il aime beaucoup travailler avec les jeunes et il donne régulièrement des conférences partout dans la province dans les écoles et pour le grand publique. Après avoir discuté avec lui, nous cherchons à faire une première conférence en octobre (date tentative: le 21 octobre) pour les niveaux 3 à 6 et une deuxième après Noël pour les niveaux 7 à 12.

Il ne demande pas de rémunération alors le seul coût à défrayer sera pour payer la salle (à déterminer) et possiblement lui offrir un petit cadeau. J'aimerais que vous confirmiez votre intérêt ou non par courriel avant mercredi, le 5 octobre. Hello,

I just wanted to let you know about a few events that are in the process of organizing right now.

1. Haunted House: this is going to happen October 18 I do believe from 4pm-9pm. I will update you when I know the final date and times. It is going to be a Haunted Basement for Halloween. It is suppose to be scary although younger youth can let them know ahead of time and they will make sure they do not jump out or make it that scary. The price is a non-perishable food item although they will not be turn away if they cannot afford it. The donation will be given to Mobile One.

2. Corn Maze: we are thinking of going to the corn maze in Sailsbury for a few hours. It will be on a weekend or on Monday or Tuesday in the afternoon. The cost is looking like $5 but dates and price will come later on.

3. Christmas Parade: we will be creating and participating in the Christmas Parade this year downtown. The theme is lights and winter wonderland. The dates will come soon we are just waiting on the details of when we can sign up to be in the parade. We will be looking for donations of lights and boxes when the time comes.

4. Ronald McDonald House: we will be going to the Mapelton Teaching Kitchen to learn the proper techniques in the kitchen and how to read a recipe. Then we will return later to cook the meal for the sick kids in the hospital. The dates of when this will occur is waiting for the Ronald McDonald House to give me details. After we cook and serve I am hoping to stay for a while and have the youth play with the kids a bit.

I hope some of these activities will be something you and the other Mother's will be interested in. If you are let me know and when I finalized everything I will send out another email in order for you to join us.

Guitar Lessons and More Available at the Y!

Look for more information to be posted soon about the YMCA drop-in program. Our current understanding is that the teen does not need to be a YMCA member to participate.

Here is the current schedule for the YMCA drop in program:

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday - closed
Wednesday - Drop in from 4pm-8pm
Individual guitar practice (guitars available onsite)
Thursday - Drop in from 4pm-8pm
Guitar Lessons are from 6pm to 7pm
Friday - Basketball Skills and Drills: 7pm-8pm
Open Gym: 6pm - 10pm
Saturday - Drop in from 2pm-6pm
Individual guitar practice 4pm-8pm

There is a $2 drop in fee for each visit, and they ideally would like us to register for the guitar and basketball lessons. They were not enforcing it because they currently don't have a whole lot of interest among their current clients. They stated that if they can drum up enough interest in these programs that they will be able to introduce some others. They were thinking of nutrition based cooking classes, swimming and community service/leadership. The e-mail address that I have for the contact is robert.smith@ymcamoncton.com. I will be talking to them again this Thursday night. The Drop in Center is for youth between 12 and 18.

Belliveau's Apple Orchard - tractor ride and tour of facility. THIS ACTIVITY IS NOW FULL. NO MORE REGISTRATIONS ARE BEING TAKEN.

Thursday October 13, 2011 at 12:30Pm.

Belliveau's can accomidate a group of 40 people

Jeannine Maybe will be our tour guide for the tractor ride into the orchard, she will be giving us information about the life cycle of an apple, info about
pollination, the role Bees play in an apple orchard, etc... We will then be
able to pick one apple. We are welcome to pick more apples on our own after the tour is finished. After we pick one apple we will board the wagon again for a ride to the storage centre and production line where Jeannine will give us a tour of the interior of the facility. After our tour inside families can purchase a plastic bag inside for $6 or $10 and enjoy some time in the u-pick. Aslo, families are welcome to play on the hay stacks, frolic in the pumpkins or have a snack inside. It is a fabulous acitivity.

Cost is $10/family or $3.00/child and $5.00/adult, babies are free. Fees must be collect in advance so that there is no congestion inside the facility in regards to payment. Belliveau's would prefer one individual go in and pay for the entire group. This is something that we can determine once the group is finalized.

Belliveau's can accomidate a group of 40 for the tour (children and adults).

We would like to inform members of your association about an exciting opportunity that is being offered to young New Brunswick artists to earn prizes and see their work displayed.

The United Nations has declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests. To celebrate New Brunswick’s forests, Fundy Model Forest and the Association of Registered Professional Foresters of New Brunswick are sponsoring a province-wide art competition with total prizes valued at approximately $2500.

Fundy Model Forest hopes the contest will encourage young people to experience the natural world first-hand. “It is important that we find ways to help kids connect with nature and gain a greater understanding of the forest and other ecosystems,” General Manager Nairn Hay said.

“As a forester, I am continuously awed by the beauty of the forests around us,” said Jen Hacking, one of the organizers and a Registered Professional Forester. “We are hoping to receive works that inspire and surprise in their creative interpretation of this wonder.”The competition is open to all school-age youth in New Brunswick. At the Kindergarten to Grade 8 age group, paintings or drawings are solicited, while for the high school age group entries are sought in two categories, visual art and multi-media. Entries will be accepted until noon on Oct. 12^th, 2011. Top entries will be displayed in Fredericton, Oct. 19^th at Kingswood Lodge in conjunction with the Canadian Woodlands Forum fall meeting. More exhibition opportunities are being organized throughout the province.

For youth of high-school age, one grand prize of an iPad 2 will be awarded with cash prizes of $250 and $150 in each of the visual and multi-media categories. The New Brunswick Forest Products Association is sponsoring an additional honourable mention award of $150.

Kindergarten to Grade 8 entries will be further divided into three age levels for judging purposes, with prizes to be awarded in each. The three first place prizes are a Nintendo DSI, I-Tune/I-Pod gift card and a digital camera. Second and third place in all three levels will receive $100 and $50 gift cards each. Thulium Farm in Little Shemogue is generously contributing to the awards for the younger age group.

Swimming!

Swimming at CEPS

We are able to rent the pool at CEPS (University of Moncton) for a swim time for our homeschool students. This is just a fun swim, no lessons. The dates and times are as follows:

Friday, October 14, 2 - 3 P.M.
Friday, November 25, 2 - 3 P.M.

The CEPS pool has a movable floor so that the shallow end can be made even shallower and younger children who can't swim are able to be in the water. Bathing caps are required and if necessary can be rented there ($1). The cost will be between $3 and $4 per person for the first three students in a family and the fourth and subsequent children are free. We need a certain number of "paying" swimmers to make it cost effective. I will let everyone know the final cost and if the swim is going ahead once I know the number participating.

Harold McQuade a local orienteerer is going to set up an orienteering course around Mapleton Park and guide the kids through it (map reading). The second week he will set-up another course and the kids that feel comfortable can make their way through the course on their own. Orienteering is a really fun and interesting sport for people of all ages- it combines map reading skills with cross-country running and a bit of healthy competition. Ron (Heidi's husband) has volunteered to start a cross country running club for the homeschool group. He would like to begin next Thursday, September 22 @ 6:45 for between 45 to 60 mins. The start time may change as it starts to get dark earlier. They will meet at the Mapleton Lodge and run on the trails around Mapleton park.

The club would be for Grades 2-8, exceptions for younger children can be made if their parents feel that their child is ready to learn to run about 1.6 km. Distances the children run will vary depending on their age.

He will need parent volunteers or older teens that are willing to help. So if you are a parent that wants to learn to run or are a runner yourself come out and join your child. If you have a teen that already runs and would like to help out that would be wonderful. Will let everyone know if it is a go based on the response I get over the next week.

"District 14 has begun calling all homeschoolers in their area to ask for a home visit to discuss their homeschooling. This is troubling for families who are called and also a potential new trend for the rest of the province.

For those of you in District 14, it is very important that you NOT agree to this home visit. This is a new procedure they are trying out but it is not mandatory. You can simply refuse the home visit and they will leave you alone.

If a majority of people refuse this home visit then this new procedure will almost certainly end. If people do not refuse the home visit then it will not only continue but potentially become mandatory. This is an example where the future requirements are truly in the hands of individual homeschoolers.

If you know others who are in this district who may not have gotten this email, please send this on to them as it is important that we get the word out on this issue.

Exactly 2km later, turn left onto Beach Meadows lane. There is no street sign but a big rusty barn on your left and a sign advertising waterfront lots for sale.
Follow Beach Meadows lane about 1km until the road turns to the left. Our beach house is the first one on the right.

Johnson's Mills Interpretive Center

We will hopefully see the sandpipers up close on the beach at high tide. They come in the 1000's migrating from the Arctic. The numbers will probably be lower now as it is past their peak time, but interesting and fun non the less. Kerry-Lee will be the interpreter that day. I am sure she will have many interesting things to tell us and some games and activities for us all to enjoy. High tide is at 1p.m. so we need to be there about 12:30 p.m.. It takes about 50 mins. from Moncton. If you plan to go and could send me an e-mail (heidi.mae.smith@gmail.com) that would be great- Kerry-Lee would like to have an idea of how many to expect that day. The rain date will be the next day, Tuesday, September 13th @ 1p.m. If you are unsure that morning then you can e-mail me the morning of.

Harold McQuade a local orienteerer is going to set up an orienteering course around Mapleton Park and guide the kids through it (map reading). The second week he will set-up another course and the kids that feel comfortable can make their way through the course on their own. Orienteering is a really fun and interesting sport for people of all ages- it combines map reading skills with cross-country running and a bit of healthy competition. Renardi Summer Camp

Renardi Summer Camp is for a camp for children between the ages of 5 and 10 (this includes 5 year old who have completed kindergarten as well as 10 year old who have completed grade 5). The Fascinating World of Butterflies:vRhéal Vienneau, a lepidopterist, will be presenting The Fascinating World of Butterflies at the Dieppe Public Library on Saturday, March 12th at 12:30pm. Mr. Vienneau has developed a special interest for butterflies over the last fifteen years. He currently shares his time as a semi-commercial butterfly breeder and enjoys sharing his knowledge during his presentation. The Hunt for the Pot of Gold: The Leprechaun has hidden his pot of gold somewhere in the Dieppe Public Library. Wednesday March 9 The Butterfly Man will introduce kids ages 6 and up to the wonderful world of butterflies. There will be two presentations by The Butterfly Man, a French presentation at 1:30 pm and an English presentation at 3 pm. On Wednesday night at 7 pm children’s author Diane Carmel Léger will be the special guest at the Club de lecture les marmitons. This presentation will be in French only and is open to children ages 8 and up.
Thursday, March 10 at 10:30 am children ages 6 and up are invited to let their imaginations loose at our Craft Extravaganza. At 2 pm we’ll be holding the Lego Club where we’ll have fun creating with Lego. This activity is for children ages 8 and up and participants are invited to bring their own Lego, however a small quantity of Lego will be provided.
Friday, March 11 is movie day and popcorn will be served! At 1 pm we will show four short NFB films Léon in Wintertime, Snow Cat, The Sweater and The Boy and the Snow Goose. The same films will be shown in French at 3 pm. Don’t miss these Canadian classics!

Red Cross Babysitting Course Fri., Mar 11th @ 9 am – 4 pm Your child wants to make a little pocket money through babysitting or maybe you would like to leave them home alone for short periods. Board Games Sat., Mar 12th @ 2 pm Sometimes it is nice to have a change of pace and play a relaxing board game. Children aged 6 and up are invited to participate in this activity. Legalities of Homeschooling Alert!

On May 18,2011, the Supreme Court of Canada will make a decision regarding the freedom of choice in education which could affect everyone in the country, particularly home educators (see the below e-alert).

AHEA advocates for the rights of home educators to make decisions regarding the education (including programming, curriculum and testing), and a Supreme Canada Court Decision could severely impair our rights in this regard. A decision in favour of the freedom of choice will strengthen our position as home educators to make educational choices.

The outcome, whichever way, will have significant impact on our ability to make decisions for our children. Dave Rutherford interviewed Paul Faris (President of HSLDA) about this at 10 AM on 630 CHED as well as the sister station in Calgary.

"Dear OCHEC members and leaders,
Earlier this week you received an email from OCHEC forwarding to you press releases about the Supreme Court of Canada case on May 18th regarding the Province of Quebec curriculum, the Ethics and Religious Culture (ERC), addressing the issue of whether parents have the right to choose the kind of education their children will receive, particularly in regard to religious instruction.

Basically, the province of Quebec is insisting that its students take a course on Religion and Ethics that teaches all religions are on a par. Thousands of parents have tried to excuse their children from the class, but their request has been refused (the province supplied the school boards with a standard rejection letter).

Two parents have fought this and the case will be argued in the Supreme Court. How does that work? On May 18 the nine Justices of the Court will hear both sides of the case presented (certain Christian organizations, including CCCC and EFC, are among the interveners) and then they will decide if it is the parents or the province who are able to decide what their children should learn in this case.

Why are we sending this out to our Homeschooling community? Because if the SCC decides in favour of the Quebec ministry of education, it will set precedent giving the government the right to choose and insist on the content of curriculum even religious curriculum. This case could be used in the future to decide legislation regarding home education freedoms.

We've been asked to circulate a request to join with one support group that is organizing prayer and fasting for the weeks leading up to this case. I've attached excerpts of emails from Sandra Koke who is spear-heading this prayer and fasting movement. If you would like to be part of this please contact her directly [koke@netflash.net]. "

"If the Supreme Court of Canada case we referred to is decided in favour of the Quebec school board things related to parental choice of educational material will be non-negotiable. Forever. And it would almost certainly affect homeschooling, eventually.

Imagine if you could only homeschool if you agreed to a certain curriculum (including books you disagreed with) and your kids were required to be tested on the material....and that was the only homeschooling option.

Consider how things have changed from when you were a kid. I remember being read Bible stories, told about John 3:16 and studying The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in my public school, when they still said the Lord's Prayer. None of that would happen now. Gideon Bibles are barely permitted in the Waterloo region schools and the school board is considering further legal action on that issue. What else will be lost over the next 20 years if we do not seek God's face on this? (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Pray! Pray! And please again consider fasting - if God calls you to fast a meal between now and May 18, please let me {Sandra Koke, koke@netflash.net }know.

Here are a few suggestions for specific prayer:
Pray Proverbs 21:1 "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever He pleases." - that God would direct the hearts of the Justices ("kings") to allow parents, not the government,to decide what children should learn.

Pray for all the people arguing this case on May 18 - for our Christian brothers & sisters intervening in the case, that the Holy Spirit would tell them what to say (Matthew 10:19-20). We are asked to pray for those who persecute us - not sure if the opposing folks would count as persecutors! - but pray that they (and the Justices) would have their hearts turned to Christ.

Above all, whatever happens, pray that God would be glorified.
Please ask yourself: What if you were in the situation of wanting to excuse your child from seeing an objectionable movie in class, BUT YOU COULDN'T.[These things are already happening in public schools in Ontario.] Or, you did not want your child to read a blasphemous book, but you had NO WAY of preventing it - except for your child to get an incomplete credit in that course. Or, you want to send your child to a Christian school, but the Christian school is not allowed to teach Biblical Christianity (Jesus really IS Lord, etc). Or, you are homeschooling but are forbidden to teach about Jesus (or, say, use creationist materials) or just that you are required to have your kids follow certain curricula.

Well, you could say that this doesn't affect you, and it probably wouldn't immediately. But I think it is naive to think that it wouldn't eventually. The underlying issue is WHETHER IT IS YOU OR THE GOVERNMENT WHO SHOULD CHOOSE YOUR CHILDREN'S CURRICULUM.

Lest you think "Oh, that couldn't happen here", please consider the fact that more severe restrictions already exist in western Europe. For example(this is from Wikipedia, accessed today, under "Homeschooling in Germany"): "Homeschooling in Germany is illegal with rare exceptions. The requirement to attend school has been upheld, on challenge from parents, by the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany. Parents violating the law have primarily or most prominently been Christians seeking a more religious education than that offered by the schools.[1][2] Sanctions against these parents have included fines of thousands of euros, successful legal actions to remove children from the parents' custody, and prison sentences.[1][2] It has been estimated that 600 to 1,000 German children are homeschooled, despite its illegality.[3]"

Provincial Student Vote

MCHE/PECM is pleased to announce its first ever provincial student vote in conjunction with Student Votes and Election Canada.

Your students will be given the opportunity to vote for candidates running in the federal election. In our student vote kit we received activity resources, campaign posters, ballot boxes, voting screens, electoral district maps, elections operations manual and ballots. These were free and come in both English and French. The final results of the student votes will be publicly released on Election Night.

All you have to do is register with Jodie at jodie.grondin@gmail.com and tell me your voting area and how many students will participate. There is no cost and your children will learn lots and have a fun day.

It will be held on Friday April 29th from 1-3:00 (estimated time of ending)...location to be determined.

There will be 2 groups...one for the younger children and one for the high school students.

Your students take part in the whole process....some will be Deputy Returning Officers, some Poll Clerks. The children grades K to 12 will be able to participate in the election process and vote for their official candidates for the election. It would be great if your child could come prepared to speak about at least one of the candidates in your riding. Some have been chosen already so check with me regarding eligibility. Make sure the kids follow the election news in the newspaper, online or on television so they know who to vote for and what they stand for.

If you participate it would be wonderful to get some photos and maybe some opinions of the students on how they enjoyed the day or an article by an older student to publish in the HENB Homeward Bound Newsletter.

All homeschool children (K-12) and parents, are invited to a live presentation of the Vancouver Canadian Olympian medal winners.
Where: Moncton Coliseum
When: Thursday April 14, at 9:30.

This is a free event and interesting for the all children but especially grades 4-8. Open to all ages.

We, homeschool families were personally invited to come, so one come all.

Track and Field 2011

We will be at a different location this year, back to the Canada Games Stadium.

Let me know as soon as possible if you would like to participate in this day.

I need to know:
the names of all children participating,
their ages as of June,
the parent's name who plans to be involved,
as well as phone numbers and emails of anyone not an Fundy Home Educator member.

If parents have a preference as to what they do that day, I would like to know that as well.
Some of the options are: timing races, measuring long jump, measuring softball throw, coordinating the obstacle course, or being a group leader and doing "crowd control" with the younger/older girls/boys.

When: Classes will begin Thursday, April 14^th, 2011 and go for six consecutive weeks ending May 19th.

* SPECIAL NOTICE FOR PARENTS OF GRADE 8 AND GRADE 12 GRADUATES: Please meet this Friday, March 18th from 6:30 - 6:40 P.M. upstairs in the registration area (see below) to discuss the graduation portion of the year-end celebration.

Registration: We are conducting registration in a new way this session. Please read the class info below and come prepared to register this Friday, March 18^th. DO NOT email the registrar for the class - confirmation of your registration will be made in person upon payment this Friday.

How will registration work? Come to The Christian Church of Moncton, 2181 Mountain Road, Moncton on Friday, March 18^th. Use the TOP (main) entrance upstairs (you may park below as usual in preparation for the MCHE support group meeting to begin at 7 P.M.). Registration will be from 6:15 - 7 P.M. on a first-come, first-serve basis. MCHE support group members will have priority. Each parent may register only for their family. If you are unable to attend, you may send another to register for you. However, to avoid one person registering for multiple families, the person you designate may only register for you provided they are not registering their own child in that particular class.

What do you need to bring? Your class payment and your MCHE card if you are a member. For this spring Co-op, there will be no building fee for MCHE members. For non-members, a building fee of $6 will be charged.

What else do you need to know?
*You will be asked to read and sign a Code of Conduct for our time at Allison Church for the duration of the Co-op.

*The true essence of a Co-op is the involvement of all the parents attending. You will need to be ready to select an area of service to help make our co-op a success!

*As you can appreciate, class size is limited and many may wish the opportunity to participate in a particular class. Please do not register if you are not committed to attending.

Art classes are once again being offered by Dawn Campbell.
Dawn's love of children and art make these classes enjoyable to all.

Kindergarten - grade 2 - 1:00-2:00 P.M. - (max -12 students)

Grades 3-6 - 2:30-4:00 P.M. (max - 15 students)

Please bring the following items each week-
pencil, eraser, scissors, ruler, sketch book and art pastels in a carry case with all items labeled with your child's name

Registration: The cost for art classes is $30 and payment may be made by cash or cheque payable to Dawn Campbell. Register with Krista Lutes on March 18^th. Payment is required at registration.

Conversational French

Course Description: The conversational French program will focus on the French needed in day-to-day life and social situations. The lesson in basic conversational French will teach such things as introducing yourself; asking friendly questions during a conversation and responding; and theme related phrases. We will study such themes as the restaurant, our families, clothing, weather, etc.

Prerequisites: A basic working knowledge of the French language is recommended.

Homework: No written assignments.

Class size: Maximum 15 students

Grades: Open to students in grades 3 through 6.
Cost: $10 per student.

Time: 12:30 to 1:30 P.M.

Teacher: Mrs. Tammy Gallagher has experience teaching French in both public and private school.

Registration: Register with Rachael MacCabe on March 18^th. Payment (cash only) is required at registration.

Basic Photography

This class will be taught by local photographer Gretchen Chevarie of bluechairphoto.com.

Grades: This class is open to students in grade 5 and up.

Class Size: Maximum 10 students

Time: 12:30 - 1:30 P.M.

Each child will require a digital camera to use, basic working knowledge of it and extra batteries (an owner’s manual would also be helpful).

Gretchen will teach lighting, composition, and how to make basic changes to photos with software.

Homework: There will be some homework assignments.

Cost: $30.00 per student

Registration: Register with Lana Brown on March 18^th. Payment (cash only) is required at registration.

Finances

Course Description - Students will gain an understanding of how money works including the following topics: earning, saving, spending, giving, investing, credit and borrowing, and home finance record keeping.

Grades: High School (grade 9 and up) and any interested parents

Class Size: Maximum 12 students (plus parents)
Time: 3:00 - 4:00 P.M.

Cost: There is no fee for this class.

Homework: Some small homework tasks may be assigned.

Teacher: Terry MacCabe

Registration: Register with Rachael MacCabe on March 18^th.

Sewing

This class is intended for children with a very basic knowledge of sewing. That would include threading a needle and tying knots, straight stitch on a sewing machine and names of basic sewing supplies. Our goal for this class will be to teach children to purchase, read and use a pattern and complete the project.

Grades: This class is open to girls in grades 5 and up.

Class Size: Maximum 10 students

Time: 1:30 - 3:00 P.M.

Cost: There is no fee as such for this class but each child will need to purchase a particular pattern and appropriate fabric. All students will require a needle and thread, pins, scissors, and a sewing machine (with owner’s manual and extra bobbins, if possible).

Prerequisites: Please ensure that your child knows how to thread their sewing machine, though we will be available to help.

Moms are encouraged to join their daughter and help whenever needed.

Study Skills

Course Description: This interesting video series titled Where There's a Will There's an A ..... How to Get Better Grades presents many effective tools which will encourage high school students to study more effectively using practical techniques.

Grades: This class is open to high school students (grade 9 and up).

Time: 1:30 - 2:30 P.M.

Cost: There is no fee for this class.

What to bring: Students will need to bring a three-ring binder, looseleaf and a pen.

Mom’s In Touch (MIT)

Here is an opportunity for mothers to take time out from our busy schedules to pray for our children and homeschools. What a transformation we will see in the lives of our children through the power of prayer.

Board Games

There will be two rooms set up with board games for the children not in classes to play.

There will be two adults supervising these rooms.

MCHE 2011 Heritage Fair

Everyone is invited to take part in the third annual MCHE Heritage Fair! Your children can learn about our great country and communities while being part of an educational and exciting province and nation wide program. A heritage fair project can be on a topic from science, history, geography, geneology, family history, immigration, etc. as long as the theme is Canadian. Here are some details:

When: Tuesday, April 26, at 6:30 P.M. at the Oasis D'Or, 857 Amirault, Dieppe

What: (from the Heritage Fair website)

"Heritage Fair projects may include (but are not limited to): Models; Caricatures; Posters; Collections; Maps; Demonstrations; Crafts; Artistic Displays; Short Stories and Heritage Journal Writing; Poetry; Theatrical Scripts; Debates and Public Speaking; Dramatic Productions; Music; Dance; Computer Presentations; Video "Heritage Minutes" Productions; Oral Interviews; Photography Exhibits… the possibilities are endless !

All projects must have a Canadian theme - history, geography or heritage - and entail some research conducted by the participants. Projects can be specific to one time-period or display a thematic development or progression.
Students may prepare projects as individuals or in groups.
Students provide written research that was undertaken in developing their projects.
Projects must be ready for display and those selected for the National Heritage Fair should not exceed: 80 cm in depth, 150 cm in width, 100 cm in height." *

All our MCHE support group students will be able to attend the Regional Heritage Fair which will held on May 6, 2011 in Bloomfield, NB. At the Regional Fair, students have an opportunity to present their projects to a committee of judges, as well as the general public and will be eligible to receive a series of provincial awards as follows:

- McCain Literacy Award in Canadian History
- NB Aborginal Affairs Secretariat Award for the Celebration of Aboriginal Heritage
- NB Provincial Capital Commission Award
- NB Labour History Award
- Sport Legacy Award
- Archival Award of NB
- NB Museum Award of Merit
- NB St. Croix 2004 Award
- NB Historic Places Award

Your project need not fall within one of the above categories (you can do it on anything Canadian you like) but only those in the above categories are eligible for an award. The Regional Heritage Fair is for all home educated children in NB and is a wonderful opportunity for your children to be part of something larger. Last year we were able to reimburse families for their traveling expenses down to Bloomfield and should be able to do this again this year with the generous funding provided by the province. It is a great day! One of the projects from the Regional Fair is also chosen to go to the Nationals.

One student at the Regional Heritage Fair is selected to attend the Provincial Heritage Fair Showcase at Government House, Fredericton, June 25, 26. The projects are on display usually for about three weeks (June 6 - 30; the showcase is non-competitive).

Hope you will consider having your student(s) take part this year!

BEGBIE CANADIAN HISTORY CONTEST

Do you have students from Grades 10-12???

Do you want your student to learn more about Canadian History??

In developing and promoting the Begbie Contest, the Society hopes to meet the following specific objectives:

to produce a national Canadian history contest for high school students
to increase the profile and popularity of Canadian history among students, parents and the general public
to encourage students to acquire the common core of knowledge educated Canadian citizens need in order to make informed decisions about future problems
to expose students to the primary and secondary sources used by historians and to engage them in evaluating, analyzing and interpreting those sources
to challenge students to think critically about historical and contemporary problems and to encourage them to critically evaluate "expert" opinions
to encourage and recognize students who strive for academic achievement and academic excellence in the field of Canadian history.

The contest is designed for interested senior level secondary school students. The aim of the competition is to provide students with an opportunity to test their skills in history against those of students from schools across Canada. The contest is not an examination, and there is no passing or failing grade. We believe that all students who have prepared for the contest will enjoy and benefit from the experience.

Students are provided with a rich variety of primary and secondary sources dealing with national issues and with questions which require them to use the critical thinking skills historians employ in analyzing such sources. The contest questions are based on major events ion Canadian history from 1850 to the present. The emphasis is on critical thinking skills using primary sources such as political cartoons, paintings, posters, graphs, maps, statistics, songs, speeches, diaries, letters, newspaper articles and memoirs.

The contest is two hours in length and is normally written in the candidate’s school under the supervision of a classroom teacher. It consists of 25 multiple choice questions, many of which require students to assess or interpret source documents; one short essay response question; and one essay question which requires students to consider a variety of documents presenting different points of view on an issue in Canadian history.

The eighteenth annual Begbie Canadian History Contest will be held on the afternoon of April 13, 2011. Location to be determined. The cost is $10 per student with a $15 school fee which we will divide between ourselves.

AWARDS: one prize of $1000 for every 250 Registrants!!!

Renaissance costumes (1600's-1800's) are mandatory.

Teaching The Difficult Child, Part 3

Teaching The Difficult Child, Part 3 from the Workshop by the same name.

For the last two days we have talked about the first two parts of the Acronym:

S-T-O-P

S-Stop the sarcasm, joking, and belittling of my child

T-Truth- I became convinced that from that day forward, I would try to speak only the absolute truth from God's word over her.

Now, we get to the O-

O- Overhaul your mind to a new way of thinking and acting. You may have one or more children that just do not seem to learn the way the others do. Here are some of the things we did to help:

· Break down tasks into the smallest possible pieces.

When my child proved to have a hard time with certain instruction, I learned to interact differently. For some children, you can simply give an instruction and expect them to follow through. But just because this was the 'norm' to which I was accustomed did not mean it was the only correct way for a child to be. I learned to break instruction down into small pieces. It was not: "Go complete your math assignment". It was:

"Go get your math book and bring it to me."

"Good, now open up to your lesson."

" Good. What do you need? Do you need a ruler? Go get it and bring it here," etc.

I broke it down into the smallest possible piece. This gave her the highest chance of success and gave me the highest chance of being able to praise her before any corrections had to occur. Also, if there was a failure to follow through, I was able to deal with the simple small behavior, and the entire math lesson was not blown.

There were many days that I would look for things to praise because they seemed so few and far between.

· Remember that the child is not his or her behavior.

This is key: I had to continually remind myself that even if her behavior were not praiseworthy and excellent, she as a person was excellent and praiseworthy.

Like Psalm 139 says, The Lord created her the way he chose and if it was good enough for him, it should certainly be good enough for me. I would sometimes just stop her and say: "I am so thankful for you." "I think you will make a wonderful mother some day because you have so much energy."

· Another thing I did was to help her learn to cope better with others.

· Train on behaviors during times of non-conflict in a calm and systematic way.

One example of this is she had no natural sympathy. Have you ever met a child who could step over a bleeding child to reach a piece of candy and never take notice of the one who was hurt? I could not believe how apathetic she was to the plight or pain of others.

It was not that she did not seem to care. She honestly did not seem to SEE that other people had feelings and that she needed to care for them.

When I first noticed this, I was beside myself. I wrongly characterized her of being vey selfish, and at the very least, lazy. She simply did not seem to care about the feelings of others.

But once I realized that she did not seem to be growing out of these behaviors, I went to work on these during times of non-conflict.

I would tell her scenarios and coach her on proper behaviors. Often these were based on recent problems I had seen in her, but by dealing with them during a time of non-conflict, it was not threatening to her. Then, when the situation arose again, I would coach her immediately on what was expected to happen in particular circumstances.

I can remember saying: "Look- Your sister is hurt. You must stop what you are doing immediately and go and check and see how she is doing. You cannot continue playing with her ball while she is laying on the ground crying. Ask her what you can do to help. Offer her an icepack." Over time, she learned to have sympathy for others, and now if someone is hurt, she is usually the fastest to run to their aid.

Ok, more practical tips will come tomorrow- this is enough to chew on for one day.

Teaching the Difficult Child, Part 2 from the workshop by the same name.

Yesterday I shared with you how the Lord began helping me see my role as a mother of a "difficult" child a little differently. I realized I had to change, and I developed the Acronym

S-T-O-P

The S in stop actually stood for:

S-Stop the sarcasm, joking, and belittling of my child

Now, the T in S-T-O-P stands for TRUTH.

T-truth- I became convinced that from that day forward, I would try to speak only the absolute truth from God's word over her.

I got in the habit of telling ALL my children: "I'm so glad God gave you to me. You are beautiful. I adore you. You are funny. You are kind. You are sweet. You are a delight.

I also set about renewing my mind daily with scriptrues that tell me God's opinion of my precious children:

· Psalm 127:3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.

· Proverbs 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

· Psalm 127:4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth.

Psalm 139 was the most powerful to me.

· Psalm 139: ¹³ For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. ¹⁴ I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. ¹⁵ My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, ¹⁶ your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. ¹⁷ How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

If God was so smitten with my child that he created each and everyone personally in my womb, who was I to say that any one of them was "less than" I hoped, prayed and dreamed? I tell you, I was wrong in how I perceived her. Just because my chld was different, it did not mean that she was less than. I just needed to learn a different way to approach her unique personality and God-given temperment.

Tomorrow, I am going to share the "O" in stop- Overhaul your mind to a new way of thinking and acting. This is where we get into the nuts and bolts of teaching a "difficult" child.

Take advantage of this free "meet and greet open house week" to get to know the site and teachers. It's well worth it, especially for those odd courses like French.

Teaching the Difficult Child-Ponts to Ponder

As I begin this series, it is with much fear and trepidation. You see, I did not really know how to be a godly mother, and in many ways, my own behavior is so shameful that I am afraid that by sharing it, you would come to despise me. After praying at great length about it, I realized that this fear and shame for the person I used to be- is only the enemy's way of preventing this message from being shared. So, I ask that you have grace with me and realize that only the Lord could take a woman with so many faults and imperfections and give her something to teach from his Word. All that to say- this woman that I once was has been forgiven by the Lord and I walk in victory today.

So, with no further ado:

Teaching the Difficult Child based upon the AudioWorkshop by the same name.

There are many reasons why a person would be come to a workshop on teaching the difficult child. When I prayed about this workshop, I perceived that the Lord was telling me to focus very little on my "difficult child" and spend the majority of the time focused on the things we did that helped in our home. The reasons for this are varied. One, my own children are often in my workshops and I do not want in any way to hurt any of my children by talking about what some may perceive as their weaknesses.

Secondly, there are many reasons why a child may be difficult. It may be a physical or psychological difference. It may be a personality difference. It may be a lack of training skills from the parents, but whatever the reason, there are many common steps we can take to help when a child is a bit more "difficult."

Years ago a friend of mine asked me to tea and told me to bring my Bible along. When we sat down, she started going through all the scriptures where the Lord talked about children.

As the conversation went on, I realized that she was talking to me as if I did not love my children. I was shocked. Here I was homeschooling, and I had given up everything to be home with them. How could she think I did not love them?

Before I had a chance to speak and start telling her all of this she quietly stated: "I know you love your children, but the way you talk about them does not speak the truth of that to them or others."

"You say things like: My child did ________________ today, do you want her?" Or "I just need a day off from her." Or, " I am so OVER her fit throwing." And my voice and tone to my children could at times be harsh, particularly my one who always seemed to have an explanation point at the end of the name.

I sat at the table stunned, then went home to ponder what she said. Was it true? Did I really treat my child poorly? What about my little joking: "Do you want her?" That was not serious, of course, but what exactly DID I mean when I said those things? I realized that my own attitude was not godly.

I sat down and prayed about my treatment of each of my children, with the more difficult one in the forefront of my thoughts and developed a plan of action.

For the next few days, we are going to talk about that plan of action with the Acronym STOP:

S-Stop the sarcasm, joking, and belittling of my child

The first thing I needed to do was to change the way I treated all of the children. Although I did not see it this way previously, I came to see that I had fallen into the habit of joking or belittling my child.

Here is what I mean. When one was being particularly difficult, I might have looked at her other sister and threw my hands in the air. Often others felt as annoyed by our "special one" as I was.

But now I was convicted that this was true because I had set up our relationship that way. It had become an "us versus her" kind of mindset. I would speak in hushed tones about whatever outrageous behavior she had done. I would roll my eyes when she behaved erratically so that my other children would see it.

With those kinds of ungodly behavior modeled for them, the children would treat one another this way too. It was so bad that sometimes when we would hear our "difficult one" coming onto the scene, our eyes would lock in a "oh boy here it starts" kind of look.

But Ephesians 5:4 tells us: Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

So, I had to model the appropriate way to love this one. I started making myself smile broadly when she entered the room. I would not participate in any type of derogatory looks, body language or words about this child. I had to lead the way and stop this behavior, and was quick to correct it when I noticed it among the other children. We all had to learn to be welcoming to each child when they arrived in the room. Please do not misunderstand me.

This child was still difficult.

But instead of seeing her as a burden, I saw her as my beloved child, in whom my Holy and Living god was well-pleased. He created her, knitted her in my womb. Gave this precious gift to me. And I was never going to be guilty of being ungrateful again.

Skiing Change notice!

Hi Everyone,

This is to let all of you know that the date for skiing at Poley Mountain has been changed from January 10, 2010 to January 11, 2010 due to the fact that there is no school on the 10th so likely the hill will be very busy.

Please let me (Linda Nadj) know by January 6th by e-mail or phone at lindathecheeselady.com whether or not you will be skiing with Fundy Home Educators Group on the 11th of January. I will need height, weight and shoe size of all those planning to participate in the School on Skis. If you are not planning to ski as part of Fundy Home Educators School on Skis, I really don't need to know if you are skiing or not.

We must have 15 people to have the School on Skis.
